Read the label before choosing a supplement
September 12, 2026

A product name is a starting point. The useful detail is usually on the back or side of the package. Give yourself time to read it before choosing a product, especially when comparing bottles that look similar.
Check the serving size first
A serving may be one capsule, two capsules or a measured scoop. The amounts on the panel are normally tied to that stated serving. A bottle with 60 capsules does not automatically contain 60 servings. Look at both the serving size and servings per container before comparing prices.
Separate ingredients from the product name
Look for the listed ingredient, its form and its amount. For a product with multiple ingredients, examine the whole list rather than focusing on a single highlighted word. Other ingredients can include capsule materials, flavors and ingredients used to make a powder flow or mix.
Do not assume a front-label number tells the whole story. For example, an oil quantity and the amount of particular fatty acids within that oil are different measurements. Compare the same type of information on each label.
Read the information that affects your choice
- Check ingredients and allergen statements against your own needs.
- Read directions, warnings and storage instructions.
- Check that the seal is intact and the product is within its stated expiry period.
- Keep the lot number and purchase information if you need to ask a question.
A product suited to a friend may not be suited to you. Ask a qualified healthcare professional about interactions or use during pregnancy, nursing or a medical condition.
Treat benefit claims as claims
Statements about what a supplement does require appropriate support; a polished package is not that support. FDA explains that structure/function claims have requirements and cannot present a supplement as diagnosing, treating, curing or preventing disease. Read FDA guidance on these claims.
FTC guidance also explains that health-product advertising must be truthful and supported before it is used. A disclaimer does not turn an unsupported promise into a supported one. Read the FTC health-products guidance.
Ask a specific question
If something is unclear, save the product name and ask about the exact detail you need: serving size, ingredient form, allergen information or storage. Do not fill in missing information by guessing. Our support page gives you a direct way to get in touch.
